About Strongsoutherly Art?

Hi, I’m Andrea Hamann, a Southern Highlands Artist based near Mittagong. Strongsoutherly has always been my studio name, chosen as a word which symbolises a connection to the elements, the weather, the dirt we stand on and this beautiful beast of a country. I’ve painted, printed, and played with paper for years, but the inner catastrophiser in me has struggled lately with finding meaning in art for arts sake. While the world goes through a period of utter stupidity, where human rights are discarded, leaders are sociopathic clowns or billionaire puppets and the ever increasingly wild climate is ignored, I’ve turned to a craft that is as old as humanity… or close to. I’m embracing my inner mud flinger and returning to potting. The plan, as I grow my skills again and learn new things, is to make simple beautiful (maybe a tad political) functional pots. Plates, bowls, cups and the occasional vase. A bit of an ode to the mingei tradition. I’ll probably return to painting and printing at some point, but right now it’s all thrown out to the point where I’m considering boxing up all my art materials. My head is full of tradition and function and the intent to make things that will hold you in good stead when you need a hot cuppa tea to face the bullshit.

Art has always been how
I make sense of the world we live in

I love collaboration

I love working on projects with creative people, whether it be organising a fundraiser like #artforfloods and #artforbales, or designing a logo for a local ‘crop swap’. Get in touch if you have ideas you want to collaborate on.

Art Blog

Join me for a bit of creative pondering. My blog posts are about all things art and life - exhibitions, inspirations, new work, other people’s wonderful work, random musings on life. You never know, you might find something inspiring!

Southern Highlands

I have a home based Art studio in the Southern Highlands, which I open a few times a year as part of the Pop Up collective, and the Southern Highlands Art Studio Trail, but you are always welcome to pop in and visit, just drop me a message via email or instagram.
