The lighters

When the ship comes in on Norfolk, its a spectator activity. Half the island turns out to watch..well, the tourists do, and the mums with lil'kids do, and a good dozen men leave their work for the day and go down to unload the ship. 

The ships have to moor off in the bay because the wharf is too shallow and the access too rocky. Well, least that's my understanding of the matter. And then they take the Lighters, the broad beamed timber boats, and they tow them out and load them up. And bring them back and unload them. Mostly with pallettes of boxes, but sometimes with car's and trucks and who knows.

So today, first I took the boy to watch, and then after I dropped him off at child care, I took myself back down with the hound, and watched some more.
